Book Report Projects
Diorama:
You will create a 3-D scene of your favorite part of the
book. Start with a box (shoe box). Paint or decorate the
background scene. Then add any characters, animals, or objects
that relate to your chosen scene. On the back of your diorama,
attach a paragraph that explains what is taking place in your scene.
This may be typed or hand written. If you choose to suspend
anything from the shoe box ceiling, try using fishing line, yarn or
string. Be as creative as you want. Try using construction
paper, paint, real outdoor tree branches, grass, shrubs, hay, etc.,
glitter, plastic figurines, yarn, tissue paper, styrofoam, clay,
straws, cotton balls, your options are endless! Have fun!!!
Book Jacket: You
will create your own book jacket. Begin with a large piece of white
construction paper. Fold the sheet of paper in half (hamburger
fold). Then create two book flaps that resemble the flaps on a
real book jacket. (Study one carefully before folding your
paper.) Next, on the cover, create your "own" illustration
depicting something from the book. Do NOT copy the picture on the
cover of the book! Be sure to include the title of the book and
the author's name. You may want to sketch and write everything in
pencil first. You can trace over everything in markers, crayons,
colored pencils, etc., when it looks the way you want it to look.
Then, on the front inside flap, write a nice paragraph about the
main character. Next, on the back inside flap write a paragraph
about the setting or problem of the story. Lastly, on the back of
your book jacket, write a nice summary about the book. Be sure to
include words that will encourage others to want to read the book.
Do NOT copy the summary from the book! I am happy to
supply you with white construction/butcher paper. You may also wish to
type up your paragraphs and paste them in the appropriate spots.
Be creative and have fun!
Mobile: You
will create a
cool mobile that we can hang from our ceiling. You may wish to
start with a coat hanger, wooden dowels, sticks, a round disk (plastic
disposable lid or poster board) or straws. Then, collect index cards or
white rectangular shapes (approximately 6x4), string, yarn, or
fishing line and coloring utentsils. On the first few cards, you
need to either illustrate or write about the main characters. On
your next card, you need to illustrate or write about the setting.
On the following card, you need to write a paragraph about what
the problem is in the story. On your last card you need to write
a paragraph about the summary of the book. Do NOT copy the
summary from the book, but rewrite in your "own" words! When you
are finished cut your strings into different lengths and hang your
cards from your mobile base. (Remember to balance your mobile.)
Interview:
Pretend you are a news reporter. You need to write up 10
thought provoking questions that you would like to ask the main
character of the book. Once you have written or typed up your 10
questions, you need to write some appropriate responses that the
character may have actually said.
Model: You
may wish to construct something that is significant to the story.
The materials you choose are endless. (An example for
Monday With A Mad Genius...Use popscicle sticks and build
Leonardo's armored car. Perhaps you want to build a model of
Leonardo's flying machine. For you artists, try painting a
replica of the famous "Mona Lisa.") Then, be sure to include a brief summary of what your model is about.
Poster:
Begin with a large poster board. This works best for size
and durability. You need to include the title of the book and the
author. Then, using either printed photos, or hand drawn
pictures include the setting, the main characters and anything that
relates to the story. Finally, you need to include a handwritten
or typed summary about the book. This may be pasted on the back
of your poster. The idea is to make your poster colorful and
appealing. I recommend laying all of the pieces down and
arranging them in an organized fashion, before pasting anything.
File Folder Report:
You will write/complete a report, create an easy 3-D visual and
display everything inside of a letter-size file folder. Your 3-D
visual is a small object that may require a cardboard base.
In addition, you may wish to use construction paper, pipe
cleaners, straws, toothpicks, rafia, yarn, glitter, paint and any other
fun add-ons. I have these file folders with paper available and ready to use, please pick-up from me. You may also "type" up
any information and paste it into the appropriate space, if you wish.
Some materials I am able to help you with...just ask. You
will also be allowed 3-5 minutes to share your project with the class.
We love to learn about new books you have read!
You will be graded on:
Required Elements (See above) Mechanics (Spelling, punctuation and grammar) Overall Creativity/Effort/NEATNESS
I
will be adding more project ideas in the next couple of days. If
you have other ideas you would like to try, please feel free to suggest
them to Mrs. White.
Have fun!
